As we start our journey with Jesus, there will be times where you’re running with Him, tripping over temptations, stopping to sin, or even walking backwards. Walking with and like Christ is not easy and when you first start, you may not even be sure where to go from there. We wanted to present insight to you so you may find your first few steps with the Lord.

1) Pray!

When we think of prayer, we mainly think of requesting and repenting. While those are key components to prayer, the first thing you should do when you pray is thank God. Thank Him for giving you life and for blessing you with this new life in Him. There’s always something to be thankful for. Ask the Lord to give you strength to break free from sin and to guide you through the transition from a worldly mindset to a godly one. Once you rely on God and trust in His plan for you, you will build endurance, receive constant encouragement, and begin to develop a heart like His.

2) Mark the New Chapter

Marking the point in your life where you begin to live by Christ and not by the world can be very helpful. This helps you and your mind realize and accept you are no longer a child of Earth, but a child of God. Although not necessary for salvation, perhaps you could get baptized at your church or get formally introduced to the Lord and declare that He is your Lord and Savior. Allowing yourself to physically mark this day where you accepted Him into your life can help you truly make the changes and assist you in devoting yourself to God. Think of it like changing a habit: if you tell yourself and declare that today you are going to start the gym and you go today, you are more likely to continue going than if you just think to yourself in your mind “maybe I will go to the gym tomorrow”.

3) Read your Bible

If you are not walking with the Word as well, are you really walking? The Bible tells us about God’s character and all He has done. How are you worshipping God and submitting to Him when you don’t even know Him? You may think you know Him, but God doesn’t want us to have a surface-level bond with Him. Become familiar with every side of the Lord. It’s important to study the Bible for better comprehension and to receive revelations. By reading, you find questions. By studying, you find answers.

4) Make Time for Him

Making time for our Lord does not only nourish yourself and your relationship with Him, but it shows Him that even in all the stress you may be going through, you continue to love Him and set aside time that you dedicate to Him. The same way you make time to be on your phone, to take a shower, to eat, you must set time for Him. Whether that is 30 minutes of reading your Bible, or prayer every single chance you get, show Him that He is not a choice, rather a priority. Do with Him what you know brings you closer to Him. Do you feel Him the most when your read your Bible? Then do that more often! Everyone’s relationship with the Lord is different, so find what fortifies yours.

5) Fulfill the Spirit & Neglect the Sin

To truly give your life to God, you will need to cut off your old ways. This includes any objects and activities that are not of God. We often find ourselves neglecting Jesus on Earth but want to eventually worship Him and be with Him for eternity. Allow Him to be the Lord of ALL your life, not just part of it. Let your Spirit strengthen as you turn your focus to God. To drain your soul of sin, you must ask Him for forgiveness and take His mercy to do better. Battling sin is not a one-time fight; you will need to kill your flesh daily. If you get hit by sin, don’t give up and die to it. You come to the Lord and He will lift you up so you can do better.

Embarking on your spiritual journey with God is a transformative experience. These five powerful ways to begin your walk with God offer a roadmap to deepen your faith and connect with Him. As you take those first steps, remember that the path may be filled with challenges, but it's also filled with grace, love, and boundless blessings. So, embrace the journey, trust in His guidance, and watch as your relationship with God blossoms into something truly extraordinary.
