“I promise I will…”, “I swear to God that…”, and “I put it on God that…” are all phrases that we may have heard or said. It seems like harmless fun at first, but it is actually damaging to our walk with Christ.
“It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.”
Ecclesiastes 5:5 NIV
We shouldn’t assume we will have the time to keep our word and complete a promise. God is the only one who knows what will happen within the next second, day, month, year, and decade. Even Jesus says that it is better to just say yes or no rather than make a vow that we don’t know if we can keep.
When we make these statements, it’s almost as if we are putting ourselves higher than God. Our timing and plans are irrelevant, for the Lord is Almighty and has even greater plans in store. Therefore, rather than guiding others based on your “promise”, guide yourself and others on the Lord’s. A simple “yes” rather than a guarantee is sufficient. You can’t guarantee anything! As the famous saying says, don’t make promises you can’t keep.
Promises itself are not of evil and sinful. God promises many blessings to those who fear and love Him. The Lord’s Word is forever true and perfect, so we know that in the proper timing, we will experience these blessings. It is the world who infiltrates promises with cruel intentions. White lies and exaggerated truths are used to make us believe that we are all promised success and fame and riches. God’s promises are full of an eternal life with Him where we experience true glory and joy.
Believe in God’s promises, not the world’s.
