As you walk with God, there will most likely be a time where you stumble or stop. These moments can put a pause in your journey and can last days, weeks, and even months. You feel more comfortable in your sin than in your faith. You know you should pick up your cross again, but it seems to be too hard to put the sin down. What can you do to start walking with the Lord again?

1. Set Reminders to Pray

By setting a reminder to pray in the morning and at night, you are putting the thought of prayer in your head. We know prayer is essential to walking with God. It wouldn’t make sense to be on this walk with the Lord and have no connection and communication along the way. Eventually, you won’t need reminders anymore and you’ll catch yourself talking to the Lord throughout the day.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6

2. Get in the Word

It may seem intimidating to open the Bible, but it is necessary. You may have gone from reading several chapters a day to not even reading one verse. Realistically, you should start off small. Have a goal of reading at least one chapter or verse every day. Keep in mind that you should be studying and applying what you are reading. We recommend using the YouVersion Bible App to receive daily verses and devotionals!

“Blessed is the one”…” whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

and who meditates on his law day and night.” Psalms 1:1-2

3. Refresh Your Spirit

When you were distant from God, did you revisit your old playlist that consists of swears, sex, and sin? Ditch the secular music and dig into the worship music. Fill your mind with Holy things rather than earthly things. Find our playlist at the end of this post using Apple Music or Spotify!

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

4. Prepare Your Physical

The walk with God is a lifelong journey. To walk with the Lord, you need to take care of the temple He gave you. Eat a nutritious snack, drink water, take a nap! Find a routine that takes care of your body and makes you feel good. Your physical wellbeing can alter your performance and productivity, so you want to make sure you are not sulking in laziness.

“The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night.” 1 Kings 19:7-9

5. Revisit What Nourished Your Soul

We all have something that makes us feel closest to God. Whether that is listening to gospel music, opening a Bible, or visiting church, you should revisit whatever made you feel on fire for the Lord. Doing this can help you kickstart your walk and help you get back on the path of righteousness.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:17

6. Reach Out to Brothers and Sisters in Christ

Just like when we are struggling with our mental and emotional health we reach out to our friends for support, when we face spiritual problems, we can reach out to our brothers and sisters and Christ. Friends who are on the same journey as you can help you get back on your walk and encourage you. Those who truly love you and God will help you be on the right path with Him, so reach out and ask for help. Everything is better with moral support, and they might even be able to motivate you by doing Bible studies together or attending church together.

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:8-10

7. Appreciate His Presence

Even if you lost your fire for God, He is always present and doing works within your life. You just need to sit back and watch sometimes, and you will see all the wonderful things He performs and helps you in, even if you aren’t acknowledging it or thanking Him. Taking a second to appreciate this may help you revive your relationship. He loves you unconditionally, and this should be more than enough reason to love and honor Him unconditionally as well.

“for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13
