Phrases like “You Only Live Once”, “Follow your heart”, or “Nothing matters” can be very harmful to our lives. We use these sayings to justify our reckless and damaging behaviors. What we don’t always realize is that all sin leads to pain and shame, whether you feel it now or later. This infliction can spread onto others as well, such as loved ones who want better for us. These sinful actions do no good for anyone!
1 Corinthians 10:23 (NIV)
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.
Free will is something the Lord granted to us all. Google gives us the definition of “the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one's own discretion.” But what does this actually mean? God gives us options in life – either live through Him, or don’t. He didn’t fabricate us in a way where we only do good and only follow Him. Because what kind of love is that? He gives us this option and gives us all the tools to pick the right choice, so when we do, it is genuine. He didn’t want us to be robots programmed to love Him, He wants us to choose Him. If we don’t, many believe that He will send us to hell for that, when in fact, we are all set for damnation. He is saving us from it. But if we don’t take His hand, it’s our own fault.
God has blessed us with free will. So, we should be able to what we want, whenever we want? Wrong! When you cave into every desire your flesh wants without consulting God, you are behaving as if you know better than He does. God knows all and sees all. He knows what could happen if you follow through with your sinful nature. He knows what could happen if you stay aligned with His plan for you. Follow God, not your heart. Doing so does not mean you abandon your free will. Our will is free, but we risk putting our lives at the cost for sin to pay the cost.
