“We love because he first loved us.”

1 John 4:19 NIV

We are always told that we should love since He loved us first. This principle applies to all situations, even to those who we aren’t happy with. Why? Why do we need to show love to people who don’t show love to us? Because He loved US first. The world showed the worst forms of hatred to Jesus, and yet He loved us. We sin against Him every day, and yet He loves us. So if the Most High can love those who hate him, who are we to say we shouldn’t have to do the same? Let us humble ourselves and give love to everyone around us. Love is not a form of currency or trade; We don’t use it to get things in return.

How did Jesus show love? Well, he committed the greatest act of love: dying on the cross for us. Even knowing that we are sinners, and we will continue to sin, He gave himself to the evil people of the world and allowed Himself to be tortured over, and over again. Even before this great act, He showed His love through the acts He performed throughout His lifetime. Healing those in need, washing the feet of the disciples, preaching His word to all who listened, and so much more. Jesus loves us so much, and in appreciation, we should not only show the love back to Him but to those around us. We should appreciate his sacrifice on the cross and honor Him by living a light of light, righteousness, and LOVE!

So when your family is irritating you or when that customer is being rude, do your absolute best to show them love. Often times, those who show hate are the ones who need love the most. Show them the same love and grace that Jesus shows each one of us every day.
