In the beginning, God created the world and everything in it, including humans. He wanted us to spend our days in a state of peaceful praise, where we would love each other and love God. As we can see, that didn’t go to plan. In this post, we will tell the story of Adam and Eve and the lessons we can learn from their sin.
The story starts off with God creating man and woman on the sixth day – more specifically, Adam and Eve. Adam was created first. The Lord saw that he was lonely, so out of his rib, He created his companion, Eve. They were given the freedom to eat from any tree they desired, besides the tree of the knowledge of good ad evil. This tree was strictly forbidden for them. But then came the serpent and deceived them by telling them that if they eat from the tree, they will be just like God and will know good from evil. So, in disobedience to God’s word, Eve ate from the tree, and gave some to her husband Adam as well. After eating it, they both realized they were naked and ran to make themselves coverings. When God came, He found out that Adam and Eve now knew they were naked, and instantly realized they had eaten from the tree He commanded them not to. He grew angry, and cursed man and woman for generations come.
Even if we’ve heard this story before, there’s a few golden nuggets hidden within it that reveal the games we play with God; games that He doesn’t want to play.
Two Truths and One Lie. The enemy tempts humans with partial truths. Eve was told that if she ate the fruit, her eyes would be opened and she would be like God, knowing all good and evil. This is true. We do know about good and evil. Our eyes are not closed to the evils of the world. Yet he said that she would not die, even though God told her that she would indeed die if she ate the fruit from that tree. The enemy uses these partial truths to manipulate humans into doubting God’s goodness, God’s word, and God’s power. Believe the One who speaks full truths!
Hot Potato. When confronted by God, Adam immediately throws the blame on Eve. And Eve throws it to the serpent. Rather than playing Hot Potato with fault, simply own up to what you did and repent for your sins. At the end of the day, it is no one’s fault but our own. Even Jesus was tempted, yet He chose to not sin.
Hide N’ Seek. Before eating the fruit, Adam and Eve were comfortable in their nakedness. After sinning, they felt shame, and they hid themselves from God. God later asked them where they were, even though He already knew. In present times, this can look a bit different. People hide by avoiding prayer, not opening their Bibles, or by continuing to sin. We can’t hide, so why do we even try? In the game Hide N’ Seek, it’s much easier to hide than to seek. Seeking requires more effort. God has already sought you. He has waited for us to seek Him as much as He seeks us since the beginning. Go and find Him.
