Lukewarm Christianity

What does it mean to be a lukewarm Christian? Think of it like this: when you go to your sink or shower faucet, you can adjust the temperature to both hot and cold water. The result is a neutral temperature called lukewarm. In a biblical perspective, you can adjust your lifestyle to either Godly living or worldly living. You may think you can cleanse your soul and spirit with water pouring out from both, but that is far from the truth. We wanted to help you identify what actions are of lukewarm Christians and what you can do to ensure your faucet is pouring out holy water alone.

You are embarrassed to speak about your faith. You may be a holding fear of being disliked or mocked about your beliefs. Who is making you ashamed of the Lord? Friends? Family? People in general? God was not ashamed of you when He breathed life into you. Don’t be silenced by the world. Instead, shout about the Word.

You put your sin over your Salvation. Being a Christian does not mean you will never struggle with sin, so why is it wrong to just sin? When you give your life to Christ, sin will make you uneasy. You will never find comfort in sinning. But when you are living in the world, you won’t feel conviction towards your sins. You may not even repent. Know that God loves you as you are, but you should be putting in effort to improve yourself and live the path of the Lord.

You only pray when you want something. “Please Lord let me pass this test”. “God if you help me win this game, I will surely turn to you”. “Father, I really want this stomach pain to go away”. If conversations like these are the only ones you have with God, that is a problem. Especially if it does not happen often. Praying is our way of directly communicating with God. While it is good to give your worries to God, you should also be giving your praises to God as well. Thank Him for all He has done for you and express your love for the Lord.

You’re not reading your Bible. How can you expect to progress in your walk with God if you are not getting in the Word? What are you applying to your life if not Scripture? Invest in either a physical or digital Bible. Read a chapter each day. Don’t claim that you have no time to read the Bible because that may contradict what your screen time says. When you read, make sure you comprehend and apply what you have learned.

Your “faith” is motivated by fear. If you express your belief in God out of fear of going to hell, then your faith is misplaced. You should follow God because of His character, not because you simply want to avoid a consequence. This is an example of fearing the enemy rather than God. Read our post about fear so you can learn the difference! God is good all the time. That fact alone should fuel your faith.

You pick and choose your beliefs. There are many things that God forbids us to do, and in obedience to Him, we stay far away from those sins. Whether it is getting drunk, having sex outside of marriage, or gossiping, we are commanded to not fall into these worldly desires. But a lukewarm Christian will pick and choose what is a sin to them or what is not, based on what is convenient for them. They will make excuses on their sin and defend themselves. Whether it is taking scriptures out of context or molding ideas to fit their comfort, they will do anything but move away from what is wrong in the eyes of the only One who should have a judgement - the Lord.

You only do the bare minimum. When it comes to our Father, you should do everything in your power to worship Him. Reading your Bible once a week, praying only when you remember, going to church once a month- these may all be in dedication to Him, but it is clear that you are not devoting time for Him when it is inconvenient for you, only when you have nothing else to do. Worshiping the Lord is constant and should never cease, as it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 NIV “Rejoice always, pray continually”.

You love the Lord conditionally. When you love God, there should be no questions asked. No whats, ifs, or buts. There is no point in time where you should place conditions on your relationship with Him. Being too busy, not fitting in your schedule, not convenient to your lifestyle, none of these are excuses to push the Lord to the side. Loving God unconditionally means doing everything how He wants you to do it and doing it with love. His way is the best way - He only wants the best for you.

You know of Him, but don’t know Him. You may know that the Lord is our Shepherd, our Savior, our guiding light. But do you really know Him? Getting to know God is a critical part of Christianity. Get to know Him, speak to Him, talk about Him, read about Him. Anyone can claim they know of the Lord and believe in him, even the devil did. But how many can say they truly know His character and implement it in their life? You should stay away from sin because it is not of God, not because you’re scared of the consequences God may give you. You should read your Bible not because you think it will get you into heaven, but because you want to spend time with our Father. You should be with God and not be able to go a day without him because you LOVE HIM, not because you’re scared of what would happen otherwise.
